New moms and dads can feel exhausted and doubtful of their own capabilities in the midst of struggles. About Karen Wang
Founder of Serenova
Karen Wang is the founder and director of Serenova Childbirth Services. She
discovered her passion for helping new moms during her pregnancy and postpartum period, and wanted to offer doula services that would empower and equip mothers and partners in their role as parents. Graduating from
Queen’s University, Kingston, Ontario, her undergraduate degree was in Biology and English Literature. She has taught science education to high school students for five years before moving on to guidance counseling and a Masters of Education at the Ontario Institute of Studies in Education at the University of Toronto.
Currently, she has undergone birth and postpartum doula training with DONA International, and will be furthering her studies with “Happiest Baby on the Block” training in the fall. Karen is the proud
mother of daughter Lauryn, age 1.
Philosophy of Birth
Pregnancy, birth and the postpartum period are important milestones in the continuum of life. These experiences profoundly affect women, babies, fathers and families, and should be treated with the utmost respect and honour. We believe that:
- Birth is a natural process. The female body is designed for this event.
- Every woman is a unique individual. It is important to listen to your inner voice during labour, and to hear what your body is guiding you to do.
- The amount of discomfort you feel during labour may be affected by many factors including any beliefs that you have about birthing. These are best to be discussed prior to the birth.
- The postpartum period should be a time for bonding with the baby, rest and restoration. It is ideally a time where the mother, baby and partner are supported by family and friends.
Working with our clients, we seek to provide the most nurturing environment for new parents so that they can focus on becoming all that they can be. We respect parents’ wishes and their values in childrearing. Working in conjunction with them, we relay accurate and up-to-date information about labour, newborn characteristics and infant care.
